R-Black Chinned Hummingbird

Congrats to Birdman of Hell Paso for winning the Birds Eye Award - it is such a marvellous pic that I can't help wondering why I didn't spot it sooner!!

Hummingbird wings beat at an incredible 22-78 beats per second. This explains why almost all pictures of hummingbirds have the wings blurred.
If you want to freeze the wing motion you need to forget about your camera's shutter speed and instead start using flash units.

Starlings, as so many other species, were first brought to North America in the late 1800's. They have been a factor in reducing native cavity nesting bird populations (such as Bluebirds and Red-headed Woodpeckers) by competing aggressively for nesting cavities.
